Maestro Mitsumoto founded the Concordia Orchestra in Los Angeles, which he has conducted since
1986. He was artistic director of the Hakone Summer Chamber Music Festival in Japan for ten years and music director of the Laguna Beach Summer Music Festival, which he established in 1977. Called "the best chamber playing this side of Neville Marriner" (Orange County Register), his Laguna Chamber Orchestra earned high praise for its "fine articulation
uniform phrasing
and the right balance between virtuosity and nuance" (Los Angeles Times).
Born in Tokyo, Masatoshi Mitsumoto is an accomplished cellist as well. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts, he studied with Paul Tortelier at the Paris Conservatory, Andre Navarra at the Nice International Academy, and Gregor Piatigorsky at the University of Southern California. He has been a resident of the United States since 1966.
